APFA Nail Technician Accreditation Information

The accreditation assessment is comprised of a theory and practical assessment, which Nail Technicians voluntary choose to sit, to attain recognition of their prior learning studies and technical ability in the nail industry.

Criteria

The Nail Technician must be trained no less than twelve (12) months before sitting the assessment. The technician must also be or be able to join as member of the Australian Professional Fingernail Association, prior to sitting the accreditation assessment. It is a condition of undertaking this assessment, that the membership remains current, otherwise certificates must be returned to the APFA or the assessment must be re sat.

Cost

The cost to sit the accreditation assessment is - $195.00 This does not include membership to the association.

Venues

In cities where there is an APFA Accredited School, that school will be used as the venue for the assessment.

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment is comprised of 100 questions. These questions are derived from the current edition of Miladys Standard Nail Technology.

Time allowed for the assessment is 1 ½ hours.

Practical Assessment

You will be required to bring your own model and equipment to complete this portion of the assessment.
The requirements are to complete:

1 hand Permanent French (using pink & white powder)

3 nails – tip & overlay
2 nails – sculptures

1 hand Permanent French Gel

3 nails – tip & overlay (no white tips allowed)
2 nails – colour - red
Two (2) nails on each hand must be painted with two (2) coats of red crème polish.

Base & top coats will not be allowed to be used. Cuticle oils, buffing creams, etc are acceptable.

Time allowed for the assessment is 2 hours.

Floor Assessment Presentation

  • Neat and tidy appearance
  • Clean table set up, towels and desk mats
  • Orderly work habits

Hygiene

  • Student must have full understanding of sanitation products and be able to use them properly throughout the service.
  • Equipment should be properly sanitized before and after the service

Nail Structure Assessment

  • Free edge – all shaped the same
  • Barrel contour
  • Side view stress arch
  • Sidewall alignment
  • Cuticle blending
  • Soft tissue damage – cuts on/around the cuticle
  • Surface imperfections – scratching
  • Colour distinction – air bubbles in product
  • Underside appearance – dust filings, adhesive, etc
  • Overall shape – all 10 nails are similar in shape& size
  • Polish application

All of the above will be marked either “Competent” or “Non-competent” 

Resits

The technicians who do not achieve “Competent” in all aspects of the assessment will be notified immediately.

The technician may resit the portion of the assessment at a later date for a fee of $95.00.
